Raila settles for Martha Karua as his running mate. Can the Iron lady become the first female VP of Kenya?

Is Kenya nearing the Biden-Kamala moment? The answer to this might as well reveal itself in the coming two-months.

The former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, on 16th May, announced Martha Karua, popularly known as the 'Iron lady' as his running mate at KICC, Nairobi.

The nomination of Hon. Martha Karua as the VP to Raila, the ODM Party Leader and the Azimio la Umoja Presidential flag-bearer happens to be the best news to ever come to the women of Kenya in decades.

Kenya has never had a female politician occupying the 'Second-in-Command' office since independence, but Karua's nomination revealed that women incorporation, engagement and getting equal opportunities as men, is driving Kenya, as a country to a democratic gender balanced state.

Martha Karua during her interview with Citizen TV had earlier stated that, a BABA (Raila)- MAMA (Martha) Presidential ticket had reasonable chances of success in the upcoming August 9th general elections. "Baba, our Mandela will guarantee a smooth and stable transition from the 4th President to the 5th President one," she said.

"Baba, is our Joe Biden who will take over leadership after the Covid-19 Pandemic that has negatively affected the Kenyan economy. With Baba as our Joe, he needs to find our equivalent of Kamala Harris, a seasoned woman political leader with a record of accomplishments," added Karua

Kenyans have so far shown their mixed reactions about the Raila-Martha combination with most of them saying that it was a right and calculated move for the former PM especially after considering the gender balance rule more specifically for the top government office.

Various senior politicians have also shown their satisfaction to Raila's counterpart, Martha Karua with Professor Makau Mutua, The Azimio la Umoja Chief Secretariat posting on his twitter handle, "It's the Iron lady, Martha Karua. Thank you Baba, Raila Odinga." "Congratulations are in order. Madam Deputy President," also wrote Senator Oledama Olekina.

A lot more Kenyans on twitter have been seen comparing Karua with the US's first female VP Kamala Harris. The ODM Party Leader and the Narc-Kenya Party Leader are set to join hands in moving around the country to convince Kenyans to vote for them.

At the same event held at KICC, Nairobi, Raila went ahead to announce that he has nominated the former speaker of the National Assembly, Kenneth Marende as the Speaker of the Senate, Governor Oparanya as CS for Treasury and proposed Mr.Peter Munya as CS Agriculture and Governor Ali Hassan Joho as CS Lands.

Martha Karua in her acceptance speech says, "I am deeply honored by the decision to nominate me as the Deputy President of the coalition. I am aware of the responsibility and this nomination is a collective honor that cannot be left for me alone to savor. It's a personal journey."

"My history and that of Raila are similar. He is a patriot that has fought for human rights all his life. I am in Azimio la Umoja because i know Raila has the interest of the people at heart. Even when he is wronged, he makes decisions based on people's interests," she added.

The former Gichugu MP, has served as Minister for Water Resources Management and Development in the late President Kibaki's administration (2003-2008) before being appointed Minister for Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs. She is also  celebrated for advocating for the Water Act, 2002, which accelerated the pace of water reforms.
